February 23, 2017 in David Tvildiani Medical University, Tbilisi, Georgia – American Society for Microbiology free “Virtual Workshop on Scientific Writing and Publishing” was implemented in a blended format which combined nine pre-recorded training modules with live, onsite activities facilitated by a local ASM Ambassador and Georgian Medical Students’ Association General Secretary – Mariam Beridze. This 2-hour workshop provided an overview on the skills needed to write a strong scientific manuscript and the process for getting published.
Senior undergraduate/Graduate/Doctoral students and researchers from several medical schools attended on workshop, and they received information about:
• Identify importance of scientific writing and publishing and related challenges
• Acquire techniques on getting organized before you write and tips to facilitate the writing process
• Identify the qualities of effective figures and legends
• Acquire techniques for writing each section of the manuscript and common mistakes to avoid
• Learn how to craft impactful titles and construct a meaningful abstract
• Acquire best practices for selecting a journal and an understanding of the manuscript review process
• Develop an understanding of the ethics of scientific writing
