David Tvildiani Medical University had the pleasure of hosting two internationally renowned scholars, Professor Jeffrey H. Samet and Professor Karsten Lunze from Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine and Boston Medical Center, Section of General Internal Medicine, during their visit on April 20\u201324.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the visit, on April 20, Professor Samet and Professor Lunze held engaging meetings with both undergraduate (MD) and doctoral (PhD) students. These sessions provided students with a valuable opportunity to learn about clinical and research work at Boston University and Boston Medical Center, explore pathways for involvement in research, and receive direct feedback on their academic interests and career development plans. Students actively participated in discussions, asking questions and sharing their perspectives on medical education and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit also included a faculty development lecture delivered by Professor Jeffrey H. Samet on academic mentorship and supervision<\/strong>. The session focused on best practices in mentoring, fostering productive mentor\u2013mentee relationships, and strengthening research capacity within academic institutions. Faculty members had the opportunity to reflect on mentorship approaches and discuss strategies to support the next generation of healthcare professionals and researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the sessions, the Dean of the AIETI Medical School, Professor Nino Tabagari, awarded Professor Jeffrey H. Samet a certificate of appreciation in recognition of his outstanding contributions to academic capacity building in Georgia and at David Tvildiani Medical University. The award also acknowledged his dedicated mentorship and continued support in advancing collaborative work, as well as the lasting impact of his guidance, generosity, and commitment on both individual development and institutional growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 21, the visiting professors also visited Gagua Clinic, one of DTMU\u2019s long-standing teaching and research bases. During the visit, Professor Karsten Lunze delivered a lecture titled \u201cImplementing Prevention in Primary Care: Development of Systems and Education for Cervical Cancer Screening.\u201d The session was followed by an interactive discussion, where clinic staff had the opportunity to present their own research ideas and receive valuable feedback from colleagues from the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor Samet is a leading figure in internal medicine and addiction research, widely recognized for his contributions to integrating substance use disorder treatment into primary care and for advancing implementation of Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral for Treatment for substance use. Professor Lunze, who is DTMU Honorary Professor, is an expert in global health and health service research, with extensive experience in improving healthcare access for vulnerable populations and strengthening health systems through research and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
