David Tvildiani Medical University (DTMU) has launched the project \u201cImplementation of Screening and Brief Intervention (SBI) for Substance Use in Primary Care in Rural Georgia\u201d<\/em>, bringing together leading international and Georgian partners to strengthen primary health care services in rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led by Dr. Ilia Nadareishvili under the NIH Fogarty K43 Emerging Global Leader Award, the project is implemented in collaboration with Boston University (BU), Boston Medical Center (BMC), and Ilia State University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiative focuses on integrating evidence-based approaches to substance use screening and care into rural primary health care\u2014an important national priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 5 yearlong project is supported by an experienced mentorship team, including Prof. Jeffrey H. Samet and Dr. Karsten Lunze (Boston University), as well as Georgian mentors Prof. Nino Tabagari (DTMU), Prof. Irma Kirtadze and Dr. David Otiashvili (Ilia State University).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launch event took place on April 22 in Tbilisi, Georgia. It brought together representatives of academia, government, the World Health Organization, health workforce bodies, provider organization managers, and others. Representatives of the Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Health, Labour and Social Affairs of Georgia emphasized the relevance of the project for strengthening rural primary care and expressed strong institutional support for its implementation and future scale-up. It was agreed to establish a steering committee bringing together academia, government, and the Georgian Medical Holding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project represents the first NIH Fogarty K43 Emerging Global Leader Award in Georgia, a framework which combines academic research with professional development of young researchers from low- and middle-income countries. DTMU plays a central role in advancing research, training, and capacity building through this initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
